If you could hear silence, how would it sound? Maybe something like the massive stillness that opens Mahler’s First Symphony. A magical spring dawn – or the creation of the universe itself? It’s the starting point for a young artist’s journey to the heart of absolute tragedy and glorious triumph – a journey through life and death, birdsong and fanfares, funeral marches and Viennese waltz. Well, Mahler did say that “the symphony should be like the world – it must embrace everything”, and it’s one of those pieces that simply has to be experienced live. Manfred Honeck understands its every note – just as the super Christian Tetzlaff might be the finest living interpreter of Beethoven’s huge, sunlit Violin Concerto.
